Somerset Wildlife Trust membership

“The Wildlife Trusts play a very important part in protecting our natural heritage. I would encourage anyone who cares about wildlife to join them.”

Sir David Attenborough, President Emeritus

Next year will be Somerset Wildlife Trust’s 60th Anniversary. Back in 1964, 15 people joined together with the intention of setting up a county trust to protect wildlife and habitats within Somerset. This was the start of the Somerset Wildlife Trust.

In the intervening 60 years, our membership has grown from these 15 to almost 23,000 people. Most of our members are of course in Somerset, but we have supporters the length and breadth of the UK and even in other countries. Our members are passionate about Somerset’s Wildlife, but also about the Climate and Biodiversity crises that are affecting us globally.

Our members are so important to us. They bring in around 17% of all the income to the Trust, which helps us continue to do all the exciting things that you’ve been reading about over the last three months. All those small donations each month add up and it’s amazing to think that so many people working together can make such a difference.

One of our members recently got in touch about why they decided to become a member.

“I became a member of Somerset Wildlife Trust because I want to help make sure that the remaining areas of natural habitat are kept safe for wildlife. As nature is pushed further into the side-lines, it’s important to make sure these special areas are protected, not only for the animals and plants that call them home, but for our own wellbeing and for future generations.”

The generosity of our members helps to fund all our conservation work. Our members donations go where it is needed most, be it creating species rich meadows to support butterflies, improving native woodland to support small mammals, or managing water on our wetlands to protect our most precious wading birds or giving people, especially children, a chance to explore and connect with nature.
