About the event

THIS SURVEY INCLUDES A STRENUOUS WALK DOWN TO THIS REMOTE BEACH ALONG STEEP AND UNEVEN FOOTPATHS DESCENDING 1000 FEET (300M) AND ASCENDING AGAIN AFTER THE SURVEY!

Our volunteer team have not surveyed this shore on the Somerset/Devon border before and we may find some different species and so we are very excited to visit it and hope the hike up and down (with some great views en route) will be worth it!

Join our team of local volunteers to carry out a seashore survey as part of an ongoing survey of intertidal habitats along the Somerset coast. The data are being collated as part of a national survey being carried out by Wildlife Trusts across the UK. You do not need to have any prior experience of ecological survey work or of seashore ecology as there will be experts on hand to assist you.  Both complete beginners and people already trained in the ShoreSearch methods are very welcome. Somerset Wildlife Trust will provide all the sampling kit, survey sheets and identification guides.

Mobility

This beach is not suitable for people with limited mobility or who are not fit to undertake a steep walk. There is a long walk down from and up to County Gate (1000 ft descent/ascent). The survey site is a boulder shore and may difficult to negotiate.

Wheelchair access

No

What to bring

Adequate and waterproof clothes appropriate to the weather. We will be out for up to 5 hours and conditions can change and be different out on the shore than inland. Please bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink.  Apart from at the car park at the start/end there are public toilets or other facilities. The shore is uneven and slippery and in places we will be walking through shallow pools and streams so wellington boots are strongly advised. It is suggested you wear walking boots and change into wellingtons at the beach. You may have to negotiate a loose pebble ridge at the top of the beach. A walking pole might be useful.
