Minehead is associated with buckets and spades, beach games and strolling along the promenade. The bay is also a very diverse natural environment however. Lots of marine species can be found in rock pools, amongst the shingle and in the mud. Many seabirds also visit and there are wild plant communities along the top of the beach and on the coast path.
Recording what lives along the brilliant Somerset Coast is very important and will help us protect it in the future. During the BioBlitz we will identify as many species as possible over a 6 hour period. We will be assisted by expert naturalists. Everyone is welcome with no previous knowledge expected.
Where: The event will based at the Beach Hotel, The Avenue, Minehead, TA24 5AP. There is a pay and display car park next to the hotel and plenty of other parking in the town. There are some free parking spaces on Blenheim Avenue which is 5 minutes from the Hotel.
Bring/wear: The weather could still be changeable and inclement at this time of year so bring warm and waterproof clothes. You will be clambering over slippery rocks so wear walking boots or even better wellingtons as we will be walking over wet mud and in and out of rock pools.
You might want to bring binoculars if you have them. We will have a few pairs you can borrow. A notepad and pencil and a mobile phone with built in camera would also be useful. If you have identification guides or ‘apps’ for seashore life, birds or coastal plants please bring them.
There will be free tea and coffee provided, but you will need to bring you own packed lunch and snacks or you can buy food and drinks from the Beach Hotel or nearby cafés.
Safety: Wildlife Trust staff and volunteers will be co-ordinating the BioBlitz and will include trained first aiders. You are asked to follow any instructions and safety briefings carefully, but you will ultimately be responsible for your own safety and well-being and those of any children you bring.
Contact/Booking: Please sign up for the event by emailing
