2026 Competition details
Our annual photography competition is back for the summer holidays! This year's theme is 'Nature on Your Doorstep', and we're inviting you to share your stunning photos of the wildlife and wild spaces you encounter close to home. The competition opens on 13th July.
Whether you're exploring the streets of Taunton, the riverside paths of Bridgwater, or the parks and gardens of Yeovil, Somerset's urban wildlife offers endless photographic opportunities. With careful observation, patience, and a respect for nature, you'll discover that some of the county's most memorable wildlife moments happen just a short walk from home.
There are some exciting prizes up for grabs, including a year’s free membership, a concise guide to urban mammals, and the chance to have your winning photography featured in our Autumn/Winter members’ magazine.
See below for some inspiration!
Somerset is often celebrated for its rolling countryside, wetlands, and dramatic coastline, but some of its most rewarding wildlife photography opportunities can be found in towns and cities. Urban wildlife has adapted to live alongside people, creating unique moments for photographers who are willing to slow down and observe.
From foxes exploring quiet residential streets at dawn to peregrine falcons nesting on church towers, Somerset's urban spaces are full of unexpected encounters. Parks, rivers, canals, and even industrial estates provide valuable habitats for birds, mammals, and insects. Species such as kingfishers, grey herons, hedgehogs, and a wide variety of garden birds can all be photographed without leaving the town.
The best urban wildlife images are often the result of patience rather than expensive equipment. Early mornings and the final hours before sunset offer softer light and increased animal activity. A telephoto lens allows photographers to keep a respectful distance, while understanding animal behaviour helps capture natural, authentic moments without causing disturbance.
We hope this competition will inspire you to go out exploring your local town or village, and discover the wildlife stars, right on your doorstep!
