Action

Everyday actions for nature

Start your year with small, meaningful steps to finding your place within nature – for your wellbeing, your community and the planet!

Taking action for nature doesn’t have to be hard, expensive, or even mean going outside! Every day, the choices we make and the voices we raise can support nature - and help us and future generations live happier, healthier, more meaningful lives.

Don’t worry about actions that feel unachievable or out of reach. Focus on the things you can do – every step counts!

For some inspiration - here's a printable calendar to give you some daily ideas!

Starting small

We understand that sometimes it can feel like we're powerless, but there are so many ways we can act: Why not start or join a nature action group in your community, or volunteer to help manage nature reserves or your local green spaces?

Could you take action by signing up as a volunteer for Somerset Wildlife Trust? Last year we launched our Action Plan for 2025–2030 setting out our five-year plan for volunteering, explaining how we hope volunteers will support us to achieve our strategy goals, and how we will support volunteers in turn, to do this. Read the plan and see what volunteering opportunities we have >

You could write to your MP and ask what they are doing to support nature locally, regionally, and nationally or talk to your parish council to help put nature on the agenda.

Try your best to keep nature on the public and personal agenda – every conversation, post, share, blog, like, or green heart emoji builds solidarity and common ground.

Celebrate what others are doing – a little encouragement goes a long way!
Shop smart

Another key action is to take sustainable choices as a consumer - whether it’s where you shop or what you buy, there is collective power in our spending. (Just look at the rise in brands and companies promoting sustainability!)

Support nature-focussed charities – financial donations are vital to help charities conserve, restore, and defend nature. Donating can also act as a great mood booster - research shows that giving activates pleasure centres in the brain, so it’s an act of care for yourself, your community, and the planet!

Another way to take action is to find out how your pension or investments are being used and if the answer doesn’t align with your values, consider shifting to ethical options that prioritise nature (including people!), not just financial gain.
