The purpose of this day will be to discuss why it is important to record trees and to work through the survey form and maps for the Park to see what has and has not been recorded in the area.

The last part of the session will involve a practical session to complete a survey of a tree. Although the trees will not be ancient it will give you the skills, knowledge, and confidence to find and record trees in your area.

The session will be followed up with an email providing links to the ATI website and resources to help you discover and record these trees in your own area.

All are welcome to attend, but the day will be particularly useful to communities who are looking at monitoring and surveying trees in their own location.  This event is not tailored for families or children.

The course leader, Barbra Lakin, is the Biodiversity and Landscape officer in the Nature Recovery Team at Somerset Council.  She has helped many local groups to learn how to recognise Ancient and Veteran trees in their areas and record their results on the Woodland Trust Ancient Tree Inventory. This enables these often missed, irreplaceable habitats to become “visible”. This year she became a Woodland Trust volunteer Ancient Tree Verifier for potential ancient and veteran trees submitted to the inventory.

The day will be supported by Somerset Wildlife Trust staff who will be available to tell people more about how they can get involved with other community environmental activities and training.
