From cosy nooks to nature books: Kristen explores Taunton Library

When it’s cold and wet outside, what better way to reconnect with your wild side than by cosying up with a good nature book? Our Wilder Lives Manager, Kristen, recently visited Taunton Library to explore some of the nature-inspired treasures on their shelves. Watch or read about what she discovered below.

Having worked with some of Somerset’s Libraries this year on various projects, we know how important nature and wildlife-based literature is to many. With so many interesting and varied titles to choose from – there's bound to be something that grabs your attention. And it also doesn’t have to cost a thing - with free membership and no late fees on cards registered to children, exploring the natural world through reading is wonderfully accessible.

We arrived on a damp, wintery day and were greeted by cheery, helpful library staff who were keen to show us a gorgeous selection of nature titles.

After browsing the shelves, I decided on a few books that I wanted to take a closer look at, including a factual book - Fungi by Professor Lynne Boddy and Ali Ashby - packed with fascinating stories about hundreds of different mushroom species and accompanied by stunning illustrations. It’s a beautiful book to go back to again and again.

Taunton Library also has a brilliant selection of nature themed children’s books – with many supporting and inspiring children to take action for nature at home and in their communities, and others diving deep into one specific animal or species for those who just adore Frogs, Beetles or Blackbirds!

Many of Somerset Libraries have cosy areas to curl up with a book, and a few even offer outdoor spaces (including Glastonbury and Langport). Some locations also host additional community resources – Taunton's cafe is a welcoming spot, and over the winter several libraries take part in a Coat Exchange, where donated coats (including children’s sizes) are available to swap or take for free. This is a well-used service at Taunton Library and keeps local people warm and supported through the colder months.

Taunton Library also offers Activity Trackers available to hire, encouraging people to get outdoors walking, running or simply exploring through winter.

If you’re unable to get out and about, there are still lots of ways you can access all these incredible nature-based books by accessing library facilities from home. BorrowBox allows you to borrow e-books and audiobooks with over 17,000 titles to choose from.

You can also use the Home Library Service, where a DBS-checked member of staff will come out to you to discuss your support and reading needs before helping you access the books of your choice. And if there’s a specific nature title you’re searching for, you can easily Find and Reserve it directly from home!

With 34 libraries across Somerset, from Porlock to Yeovil to Frome, there’s a cosy corner waiting for you. Discover your local library with this online map.
