 17th Jul 2014

blackbrook school visitChildren at Blackbrook Community School, in Taunton, enjoyed a visit from Bellatrix the barn owl as part of Somerset Wildlife Trust’s Community Barn Owl Project to get a nest box in every parish. The visit took place thanks to Western Power Distribution which is supporting the project by funding an additional fifty visits to Somerset schools to teach children about barn owl conservation.

101 schools visited

The project has already visited 101 schools across the county, with over 5,500 children learning about owls and habitats with visits from Bellatrix and Beau the barn owls. The children at Blackbrook Community Primary School had a talk from Chris Sperring, MBE, Hawk and Owl Trust Conservation Officer  and Vice President of Somerset Wildlife Trust. They also watched the project barn owl web camera which is home currently to Boris, Brenda and their six owlets.

A fantastic experience

Stuart Bellworthy, Head Teacher at Blackbrook Community Primary School said: “The visit from the barn owl was a fantastic experience for the whole school! Many children had never seen an owl before and were fascinated by Bellatrix and the owlets on the webcam. The children followed up the visit by writing about Bellatrix and completing owl projects. They were still talking about the visit for several days after. Our sincere thanks to Chris and Rosie from Somerset Wildlife Trust, and Western Power Distribution for making the visit possible.”

Western Power Distribution supports project

Tracy Carr from Western Power Distribution said: “Providing children with an opportunity to see the barn owls up close will hopefully help them understand what we as humans can do to help conserve these beautiful birds and the habitats they need to survive. Western Power Distribution is delighted to add its support to this project.”

The three-year Somerset Community Barn Owl Project is funded by Viridor Credits Environmental Company; a charity that distributes money from the Landfill Communities Fund, and is a collaboration with the Hawk and Owl Trust; a national charity dedicated to conserving wild birds of prey and owls in their habitats.
