We have loads of great wildlife events for adults, kids and families in Somerset. Hopefully the list below will give you lots of ideas for things to do, and give you more information about the interesting and fun activities you can take part in. Take a look at what's on below.

Trouble finding your way?

Because some of our events and things to do are held in the wilds of Somerset they include a grid reference as a meeting point - post codes are too imprecise. To see the location for the activity on a map go to Street Map and type in the grid reference (e.g. ST456437 no spaces.) If you zoom out you will first see the OS Explorer and Landranger maps which have more detail and then larger scale maps. Go to Street Map now.

Sunday 5 February

Join us at Harridge Woods where we will carry out coppicing work and clear up after any winter felling works. 

Join the Sedgemoor Conservation Volunteers at Chilton Moor Reserve.  We will be cutting back scrub & bramble from rhine banks and pollarding willows, burning or chipping the brash.

Come and join the East Poldens Conservation Volunteers on a joint activity with Poldens Large Blue Action Group where we will rake and burn an area of cut scrub at Green Down.
 

A visit to the RSPB West Sedgeemoor Reserve to see winter wildfowl.

Dr. Charles Hill, former tree warden for the Woodland Trust, talks about woods and their importance for the environment.

Saturday 11 February

A walk through part of the ancient forest of Selwood to look for wintering birds and other wildlife

Tuesday 14 February

Martin Prothero will lead a walk looking for animal tracks.

Wednesday 15 February

An illustrated talk by Steve Oakes on "The Magic of Migration".

Thursday 16 February

Come and join the East Poldens Conservation Volunteers to help coppice hazel along a ride edge at Great Breach Wood.
 

Friday 17 February

Join us on Hopcott Common where we will be carrying out heathland restoration for the benefit of nightjars, Dartford warblers, heath fritillary butterflies and glow worms.

 

Saturday 18 February - Saturday 10 March

Local photographer Ben Simmonds is providing an opportunity to learn more about wildlife photography in a course of four sessions.

Sunday 19 February

Join the Sedgemoor Conservation Volunteers at Berrow Dunes.  We will be cutting & burning sea-buckthorn, perhaps planting marram grass.

Tracking and Surveying small mammals at Playses Orchard Farm.

Monday 20 February

A coach trip to see the over-wintering birds on the Axe estuary.

Tuesday 21 February

A light hearted look at bird watching in Somerset with James Packer.

Hazel Attwood will give an illustrated talk on a trip to Antarctica

Wednesday 22 February

A talk on the progress made to reintroduce cranes to the Somerset Levels  by Damon Bridge of the RSPB & the Great Crane Project

Talk on the Bechstein Bats survey by Paul Kennedy

Friday 24 February

Edward Wells SWT Trustee and popular speaker at our events will speak on an interesting aspect of Botany.

A walk in Great Breach Wood with Chris Billinghurst to identify trees without their leaves.

Morning walk around Swell Wood.

Wednesday 29 February

A naturalist & wildlife photographer, Den Bridel gives an illustrated talk on Somerset Flora & Fauna.

Friday 2 March - Thursday 8 March

Multi-award winning wildlife photographer, cameraman, explorer and two-time winner of the Polar Medal, Doug Allan embarks on his “talky tour” across the UK. Venues: Yeovil, Bristol and Taunton.

Talk with Derek Gow who is at the forefront of British conservation and a familiar face on T.V.

Anne Bebbington describes how plant pollination can happen without the aid of insects.

Monday 12 March

Find out about barn owls and how you get involved in a new conservation project being launched by Somerset Wildlife Trust at the first Community Barn Owl Project talk at Bruton School for Girls on Monday, March 12, 6.30-8pm.

Tuesday 13 March

Damon Bridge of the RSPB will explain about the reintroduction of cranes to the Somerset Levels.

Come and join the East Poldens Conservation Volunteers to help cut and rake up a small glade at Great Breach Wood.
 

Dr.Johnny Birks is a world renowned Mustalid expert and will reveal their lifestyles and natural history.

We welcome the return of Chris Cornell, local wildlife enthusiast.

Next year’s popular Annual Mendip Hills AONB Historic Environment day is to be held on Saturday 24th March 2012 at Wells & Mendip Museum. Guest speakers include Professor Mick Aston from Channel Four’s Time Team, Bob Croft, County Archaeologist for Somerset County Council and Stuart Milby from Context One Archaeology.

Morning walk around Yeovil Ninesprings Country Park.

Wednesday 28 March

Beekeeper Alex Morrice wil give an interesting & informative talk on how bees cope with climate change challenges such as season shifts and associated problems.

Thursday 29 March

Ann Bebbington gives a talk on pollination mechanisms and the behaviour of insects

Friday 30 March

Join us on Hopcott Common where we will be carrying out heathland restoration for the benefit of nightjars, Dartford warblers, heath fritillary butterflies and glow worms.

 

Saturday 31 March

Damon Bridge will lead a walk on the Levels to show where and how the cranes are living.

Sunday 1 April

Join us at Harridge Woods where we will carry out maintenance work on the Keepers Cottage, including re-pointing walls.  Also footpath clearance nearby. 

Join the Sedgemoor Conservation Volunteers at Catcott Heath Reserve where we will be cutting around annual pits, nursery beds and experimental plots. We will also carry out path maintenance.

Talk with Graham Long, a retired clergyman and diarist for the Guardian Newspaper.
