Following its purchase of British Energy, French energy giant EDF announced in 2009 that it was progressing plans to develop a new nuclear build at Hinkley, called Point C. A new nuclear installation plus supporting infrastructure will undoubtedly have an impact upon Somerset’s local biodiversity, unless care is taken at the planning and design phase to build measures for wildlife into the proposals. For this reason, Somerset Wildlife Trust, along with other conservation organisations, has been meeting with EDF and their consultants to review ecological survey work, and input to the development of mitigation, as the project progresses. |

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) is continuing with stage 2 studies on the options for energy generation in the Severn Estuary, and associated studies on Habitats Directive issues. Deadlines have moved back and we are expecting a second public consultation, on a preferred energy generation option, now the new Government is confirmed. |
