Education

What do we do?
The education programme will be up and running in September 2008.
We are now in the process of developing new and exciting school programmes that will make the most of opportunities locally. We plan to introduce school children to their local nature reserves, offering the excellent hands on experiences we always have.
How do we do it?
We will offer a range of curriculum linked activities supporting science, geography and citizenship schemes of work.
Activities might include
pond dipping, mini beast hunting and sensory walks around wildlife rich sites close to school.
From September 2008 we will provide a school based outreach programme this might include going into schools for assemblies, running workshops, assistance in setting up after-school clubs and school grounds advice.
School membership and associate membership is
another way we are able to assist teachers in developing an awareness of the environment in lessons and after school clubs. It also includes support materials from the Wildlife Trust’s UK office.
Wildlife Watch in Somerset - the club for
children - has more than 2,000 members.
We have five Wildlife Watch groups around the county that
provide an opportunity for children and their parents to take part in environmentally themed activities.
Children do not need to be members to come along. Please contact
your local group for further details.
We are supported in our work by volunteers that assist with events for children, school activity days
and the running of our Wildlife Watch Groups.
The future
As part of Somerset Wildlife Trust's Strategy (2008-2012) we aim to work together to enhance people's connections with nature and promote sustainable living for the benefit of wildlife and people.
