WILDLIFE WATCH

About Watch
Every area of the UK has a local Wildlife Trust and Wildlife Watch is the junior branch of The Wildlife Trusts.
It is the UK's leading club for young environmentalists and is usually aimed at children eight to twelve years old.
Children can attend local Wildlife Watch groups (they do not have to be members to come along), join as subscribing members to receive our magazines and posters, and
take part in wildlife projects. Local Watch groups are run by trained volunteers who have been police checked
and offer opportunities for young people in both urban and rural areas to take part in environmentally themed activities.
Information for Parents
Within each local Wildlife Trust, Watch groups are supported by a nominated Watch organiser. The Watch organiser
for Somerset is Jessy Harris and she is responsible for recruiting Watch leaders as well as helping them to run meetings
that are safe as well as fun. We also receive help from a team at our UK office who support local groups by producing
materials and helping with advice.

What do we do in Wildlife Watch?
We want to help children explore and enjoy their surroundings - for example through fungal forays, minibeast safaris
and woodland walks. We also want to encourage them to look after their local area by perhaps setting up recycling schemes,
organising litter picks or making nest boxes for the local bird population. They may also get the opportunity to participate
in large-scale projects that enable them to monitor the environment and make valuable contributions to scientific research.

What about older children?
Some groups have opportunities for older children to carry out practical conservation work, plus develop their skills as nature detectives. Please contact your local group for information.
