There is a group to suit every interest and each group is involved in a range of different activities from surveying to practical conservation work. Many also provide advice to members of the public and conservation organisations, and they are an invaluable source of local expertise.

There are a number of specialist interest groups dedicated to conserving and recording Somerset’s rich wildlife and varied geology. Joining these groups is one of the best ways to get actively involved in recording and get support from fellow enthusiasts.

The practical conservation work groups carry out essential habitat management tasks for the benefit of local wildlife. Tasks are usually dependent on the season, but most include coppicing, scrub clearance and fencing or walling in the winter and grassland management, some surveying and path maintenance during spring and summer.

It's really important that we monitor and understand changes in both the diversity (the variety) of species we have and, more importantly, the abundance (the quantity) of wildlife species we have across the county. This in turn helps us track the health of the ecosystems that exist to support them (and us), which are coming under increasing pressure from changes in our climate.

The Wilder Gardening group (originally the Gardening for Wildlife group) was formed to provide support for those already enjoying wildlife gardening as well as to encourage others. Wilder Gardening Champions are volunteers who will happily visit to give advice and guidance on how to create, develop or improve your wildlife garden. We also give talks to gardening and other related groups on any topics associated with wildlife gardening. We have been involved in helping schools develop their grounds to increase biodiversity and maximise the learning potential for the children. We organise a newsletter and occasional events for all our group members.

All across Somerset people are coming together in their schools, churches, work places and communities to do what they can to help nature recover.
