South East Somerset (Castle Cary)
Who are we?
The South-East Somerset Area Group The Group is made up of about 6 to 8 local SWT members. The group is currently without a chairman but Caroline Rathbone is acting as the contact point at present. Helen Deeming is the Vice-Chair, David Nye is Treasurer and Caroline Rathbone is Secretary. Libby Nye is responsible for arranging monthly talks throughout the autumn, winter and spring while two long-serving Committee members, Jane Craig and Patricia Stainton, help in a myriad of ways, although do not have any specific titles. Patricia is also an SWT Trustee (as well as coordinator of the Private & Communities Nature Reserves Network) and serves as our link to Head Office.
What does the Group do?
We have monthly talks on topical environmental or conservation subjects between September and May, with the exception of January. These talks are held at Caryford Hall in Castle Cary (opposite Ansford School) on the first Tuesday of the month. Doors open at 19h30 when refreshments are served, with the talk beginning at 20h00. A small entrance charge (£2) covers the costs of the talks. For details of the talks check either the flier listing the talks for this year which you should have received, look in the latest SWT magazine or follow the relevant links on this website.
During the summer and autumn we hold various outdoor events, such as visits to conservation areas of interest in our region, fungi forays or similar. Information on these is available at the same places as the talks.
In addition we take on various conservation projects, such as toad patrols, assisting other organisations with special conservation projects and of course fund-raising, including an annual plant sale in mid-May each year.
You can see all our local events in the left-hand column. All are welcome; you don't have to be a member of the Trust.
What area does the Group cover?
The area from Babcary to Brewham through Castle Cary, Bruton and Wincanton, and from Wanstrow to Milbourne Port.
