Thursday 10 January

Come and join us in the new year at the community garden. We will be planting out garlic, pruning shrubs and perennials, shaping the new hedge as well as maintaining the old hedge. This is a practical volunteering session, please wear suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear. We generally break for lunch around 12.30 so please bring a packed lunch.

Marcus Pearson, Environmental Manager, EDF Energy, will talk about the development of Hinkley Point C and the impact on the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of local communities that are affected by the development of the Nuclear Power Station.

Thursday 7 February

Join us at the community garden in February for a bit of DIY propagation. We will be planting out mangetout, spring cabbages, lettuces, broccoli and cauliflower in home-made plastic bottle propagators. We will also be adding compost to the beds and other garden tasks. This is a practical volunteering session, please wear suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear. We generally break for lunch around 12.30 so please bring a packed lunch. If you have any spare 2ltr empty bottles please bring them along.

Thursday 7 March

Join us in the community garden to plant out onions, leeks, radish, lettuce, rocket and other salad leaf plugs. We will also have a go at building brassica cages, weeding the beds and harvesting any nettles around the site to make fertiliser. We will also start growing herbs in pots. This is a practical volunteering session, please wear suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear. We generally break for lunch around 12.30 so please bring a packed lunch.

Westcountry Rivers Trust is an environmental charity concerned with the preservation, protection and improvement of rivers, streams and watercourses. Scott West will outline some of the projects he is involved in around Somerset. Come along to learn more about our county's beautiful rivers.

still lifeOpen invitation extended to all ‘tree babies’ and their families, local communities and general public to attend special Apple Day celebration 26th September 2017 – Somerset Wildlife Trust is pleased to announce that it is hosting an Apple Day Celebration Event on October 28th (11-3pm) in Children’s Wood to help mark the 25th anniversary of Children’s Wood.  The Children’s Wood Project was launched during National Environment Week in 1992 and aimed to create areas of woodland by planting a tree for every baby born in the Taunton Deane area. Since 1992 around 3000 trees have been planted on the site which was declared a Local Nature Reserve in May 2003, and is now enjoyed throughout the seasons by local communities.

wildwalks4Somerset residents are being invited to get out and enjoy their green spaces as Taunton-based Viridor and Somerset Wildlife Trust proudly launch ‘Viridor Wild Walks’ - a set of three walks introduced to mark Mental Health Awareness Week (8-14 May).

DSC 0510 credit Emma BradshawThis May will once again be known as Naturally Healthy Month, as Active Devon and Public Health at Somerset County Council coordinate its Naturally Healthy Campaign on behalf of the Devon and Somerset Local Nature Partnership.  Building on the success of Devon’s previous campaigns, and with the help of Somerset Wildlife Trust and Somerset’s Areas of Outstanding Nature Beauty, this will be Somerset’s first year in the programme, and it is hoped that it will be as successful as it has been for Devon in previous years.

Water vole 3 ben simmonds webKey partners and supporters of the Routes to the River Tone project - Somerset Wildlife Trust’s most successful urban wildlife project - came together on Wednesday (22nd March) to celebrate the project’s achievements over the last three years, which has been made possible through funding from Heritage Lottery Funding, Tesco and corporate partners, Viridor. A Thank you also goes to their project partners, such as Taunton Association for the Homeless (TAH) who have helped develop and deliver the project’s community engagement work.
