ShoreSearch July Survey - Soft Shore - Minehead
The Esplanade, TA24 5BE
Event details
About the event
Join our team of local volunteers to carry out a seashore survey as part of an ongoing survey of intertidal habitats along the Somerset coast. The data are being collated as part of a national survey being carried out by Wildlife Trusts across the UK. You do not need to have any prior experience of ecological survey work or of seashore ecology as there will be experts on hand to assist you. Both complete beginners and people already trained in the ShoreSearch methods are very welcome. Somerset Wildlife Trust will provide all the sampling kit, survey sheets and identification guides.
COVID Safety: The event has been adapted and fully risk assessed in the light of ongoing COVID safety guidance. You will be provided with a full safety briefing and an introduction to the survey methods by email and through access to online training resources in the days prior to the survey.

Full safety details will be provided in advance and all participants will be asked to provide their names and contact details (for ‘track and trace’ purposes) prior to attending each survey. Mobility
Seashore survey work often involves negotiating uneven terrain, clambering over potentially slippery, muddy and seaweed cover rocks and boulders and wading in rock pools. Unfortunately such work is not suitable for people with limited mobility
Wheelchair access
NoWhat to bring
We will be out on often quite exposed shores for up to 4 hours often not near toilets and other facilities. You will need to bring appropriate outdoor clothing for the time of year: warm and waterproof layers, gloves, hats and scarves in the colder months or adequate sun protection in the summer - and often both! Wellington boots or stout, waterproof walking boots are required (please do not wear no shoes). Bring something to drink and refreshments to sustain you.
A fully charged smart phone or device with mobile data capacity would be extremely useful to assist with maintaining social distancing during the survey (how these will be used will be explained in the pre-survey briefing information).
Please bring your own hand sanitiser. We intend to stay outdoors and socially distance throughout the survey, but please bring a mask if you wish to (optional). Procedures will be in place to avoid or limit the handling of any field kit provided and it will be sanitised before and after use.
Please bring your own pencil(s) with you for recording data.
If you have your own clipboard (with a waterproof cover) and/or a field notebook please bring it with you.
