For Somerset Wildlife Trust, Covid-19 struck at the worst time we could have imagined.
Right now we should be at the peak of our membership recruitment and fundraising activities, and our teams should be out on our reserves maintaining our beautiful habitats. Instead, many recruiters and staff remain furloughed, our volunteer teams are at home and our public events are cancelled until at least the end of August.
Prior to lockdown we were calculating the impact of diminishing EU funding, and the financial cost of dealing with the rapid onset of Ash Dieback on our reserves – which has shown itself to be of far greater urgency and cost than originally forecast – at least £600,000 over the next few years.
The global pandemic has made an already worrying situation so much worse and has put an enormous extra strain on our finances. We have never been so anxious about our ability to deliver our core conservation work, as we are today. We need you now more than ever.
We are facing a shortfall in 2020-21 income of at least £200,000.
The careful budgeting and prudent financial planning that ensures our work for wildlife and habitats across the county continues from year to year could never have prepared us for the current situation. The cash reserves that would have been put towards exciting conservation projects, will now need to go into keeping the organisation running.
These are worrying times for everyone, but perhaps like us you have seen a glimmer of hope. Many people have turned to the nature on their doorstep during lockdown to keep them positive, and there is a growing movement towards appreciating the true value of the natural environment and its role in ensuring our world thrives in a warming climate. We will be doing our utmost to ensure that we do not waste this moment for driving positive change for the natural environment in Somerset and will continue to fight hard to put nature at the very heart of our wonderful county.
Can you support us in rebuilding our future?
We need to raise emergency funds to cope with the financial challenge that this latest crisis brings to our door. We would be incredibly grateful if you can support us at this time with a donation.
