Where are we and what do we do?

Wells Area Group arranges talks, walks and activities throughout the year that help people to discover and value wildlife and nature in their communities.

Regular walks include a search for adders on the Mendip Hills and ‘booming Bitterns’ walks on the Somerset levels. All our events are very popular and it is encouraging to see a wide spectrum of ages all so enthusiastic about nature.

The walks are led by one of the Wells Area Group members or someone with specialist knowledge. The group suggests a donation of £5 for adults for these events. Under 16s are free.

Each year we arrange a coach outing to visit a wildlife reserve or a conservation project outside our area. These have included Brownsea Island, The Red Kite Centre at Gigrin Farm and the RSPB Nagshead Reserve in the Forest of Dean. It is hoped to resume these visits post Covid.

Where do we meet?

Talks are held in Wells Museum. But these have been suspended until further notice due to Covid restrictions. However presentations are continuing on-line and continue to be popular, attracting audiences from around the UK.

How can you help?

The Wells Area Group welcomes new volunteers to help with Somerset Wildlife Trust practical conservation tasks on our local reserves. We are also on the lookout for members with fresh ideas to join our committee to help us maintain an engaging programme of events. Enthusiasm is more important than experience and no great knowledge of wildlife is required.
