Ilminster and Chard Area Group
Join our walks and talks
All are welcome to come along to our varied programme of walks and talks that explore the best of Somerset’s wonderful wildlife and countryside. You don’t have to be a member of the Trust to enjoy these events with us.
You can view all our upcoming local events on this page (in the left hand column) or search by type (i.e. walks, talks etc), location and dates by going to the countywide events listing page.
Autumn and winter
Regular indoor meetings take place with talks covering a wide variety of wildlife topics. Talks are held usually on the 4th Friday of the month from September, through the winter months, until our AGM in April.
Meetings take place 7.30pm at the Parish Hall, North St Ilminster TA19 0DG (ST 361 147.)
Admission £2 adults, £3 non-members; no charge for children. Refreshments are available.
There is wheelchair access and limited parking on the street, in the nearby West St car park or Tesco in Shudrick Lane (free for up to 3 hours).
Spring and summer
What do members of the group do and how can I get involved?
Outdoor events take place at least monthly during the spring and summer months both in the local area and neighbouring counties.
Join other local enthusiasts and experts to explore the countryside and learn more about our fascinating wildlife and landscapes.
Members of our group are invited to note their interests for upcoming outdoor events so we can try and cover the topics people would like.
The group is organised by a small comittee of seven local people who meet just a couple of times a year. You don't need any experience, or particular expertise to get involved; just lots of enthusiasm and fresh ideas.
Along with the other Area Groups we put on more than 200 events a year to inspire and engage people with the natural world, supporting the Trust’s work and raising vital funds.
Our biggest fundraiser for the Trust is the grand plant sale towards the end of May in Ilminster Market Square - offers of help are always welcome! This year’s plant sale raised £600 on the day & SWT funds received a very welcome boost of £180 from the Chaffcombe Coffee morning and Bluebell walk.
We support several projects. Members of the group are involved in monitoring local wildlife sites and reserves. Advisory visits have been made to neighbouring parishes.
With the area being to the south of the county, several members are also involved with Devon and Dorset Trusts as well as events within Blackdown Hills AONB.
|Can you offer help with any of these? Write reports for local press, Attend a couple of committee meetings a year + social, Design Posters, Write Minutes of committee meetings, Keep accounts, Make a cuppa tea, Wash up, Be First-Aider for meetings/walks, Bring new ideas.
