At the heart of most conservation work is good data. Without supporting evidence, we can’t possibly know if the work we’re doing here at the Trust is having the impact we’re hoping for. Good quality base line data helps us understand key changes in wildlife populations, environmental factors and habitats.
This autumn we’re asking everyone on our hedgehog journey to help us complete our first ever hedgehog count. Over the week of 11th – 18th September, we’re asking everyone to head out and try and spot hedgehogs either in your garden or further afield. We appreciate that this might require some late-night ventures outside, but the more data we gather, the better understanding we will have of hedgehog numbers in Somerset.

There are three ways you can get involved in the count:
Download the iNaturalist app on the Google or Apple store
This is the best preferred method as it allows us to immediately access and review the data. You can also add sightings from anywhere, as iNaturalist can identify your location.
Log your sightings on our website
If you’re unable to download the app, this is the next best option – however, you will only be able to log sightings at locations where you know the postcode.
Return your hedgehog planner to us
Once you’ve filled in your three month hedgehog planner you can return it to us so that we can manually process your hedgehog sightings. Once again, you will only be able to log sightings at locations where you know the postcode. Make sure you write your address and postcode on the planner though!
