Now that we’ve passed the depths of winter we are expecting toads and other amphibians to emerge out of their hibernation and head off to their natal breeding ponds.
One such pond is in Castle Cary. The toads have to cross a busy road to get to the pond and unfortunately many are killed each year. From late February to early April we organise “patrols” to help the toads cross safely.
It just takes just a couple of hours one evening a week during late February and March to make a real difference to the chances of these endearing animals surviving.
