Volunteering Roles

Education Volunteer:

Children at SWT education centre

We are always in need of help with the local Wildlife Watch Groups, either assisting Watch leaders, helping with activities and props, starting up a new group or taking over from an existing leader. We would provide the support and encouragement to help you in any choice or role you would like and have stacks of equipment and ideas to help you run activities.

Team leaders are needed to help with the school programme and after school clubs (this role would be subject to a Criminal Records Bureau check and references).

Fyne Court:

Shop volunteer

Help is always welcome at the shop, where volunteers are needed to serve customers, stock the shelves and inform the public about the Trust and Fyne Court.  There is scope to open the shop all day, every day, so opportunities and hours can be flexible to suit you.

Volunteer gardener

We are looking for volunteer gardeners who can help grow, propagate and care for the plants and flowers sold at the Fyne Court shop and annual Plant Fair.

Wellington Office:

Office volunteer

Are you able to help us out in our busy Wellington office? We regularly need administrative support with a great variety of tasks and would welcome someone who is able to spare up to a day each week to lend a hand. Most tasks involve general support such as printing, laminating and putting together educational or event materials. Whatever your skills or experience we would love to hear from you.

If you only have a few hours to spare every now and then, we welcome help with large mailings to support our fundraising.

Nature reserves:

Livestock checkers

Some reserves have livestock that need brief, but regular - perhaps weekly - visual checking to ensure they are safe and well. This would normally be on a rota basis, with the amount of time required dependent on the number of names on the roster.

Volunteer reserve wardens

Volunteer reserve wardens are occasionally needed for some of our reserves. These are volunteers who become the "eyes and ears" of the nature reserve.

Conservation volunteer groups

There are volunteer groups throughout Somerset who carry out practical habitat work on SWT reserves. You can join in as many or as few times as you like and no experience is necessary. You will need to enjoy being outdoors, wear suitable clothing, have a reasonable level of fitness and take a packed lunch. If you would like to get outdoors and make a difference, please contact the individual groups for more details (see the diary page) or call Toria at the Wellington Office.

Specialist Groups

If you have an interest in a particular species or species group and would like to get involved with monitoring and learn from their wealth of knowledge, then please get in touch with one of the Somerset Specialist Groups. Contact details can be found on the volunteering info page.

If you have any questions about volunteering for the Somerset Wildlife Trust, please contact Toria on 01823 652440 or email toria.hare@somersetwildlife.org – thank you for your interest.
