We are trying to raise £5,000  for our Perry Mead Wildlfower Project so we can  deliver a variety of work on two of our  Somerset Wildlife Trust wildflower meadow reserves. Since the 1930s we have lost 97% of our wildflower meadows and this has had a hugely detrimental effect on our  pollinators such as bees and butteflies who depend on these habitats for survival. Bees and butterflies are disappearing at an alarming rate.

It's thanks to pollinators such as bees and butterflies that we get to enjoy a variety of delicious  fruit and vegetables every day such as tomatoes, runner beans and apples.  So next time you sit down and enjoy that bowl of strawberries and cream, or that pint of cider perhaps spare a little thought for the bee or butterfly that have helped make that happen.

What we want to do...

We are trying to create more habitats for bees and butteflies and would like to use any money raised to collect seeds from flower-rich fields at Babcary Meadow Nature Reserve and sow it onto a species-poor field at Perry Mead Nature Reserve. Careful preparation of the ground and suitable aftercare will ensure that the introduced flower seed germinates and transforms the field at Perry Mead from mainly grass to a diverse mix of flowering plants and grasses; perfect food for Somerset's bees and pollinators to enjoy.

We will also restore a 130 metre section of species-rich hedge at Babcary Meadows through the traditional technique of hedge-laying. We hope to protect the regenerating hedge from browsing cattle by purchasing an electric fence. We will also repair heavily rutted gateways on the reserves to improve access for farm machinery and visitors.

All this work will help create better habitat conditions for pollinators such as  bees and butterflies. It will also improve access for visitors and farm machinery used to manage the meadows.
